Sri Lanka Chase a Miracle as Scotland Dare to Spoil the Fairytale

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 is in the most dramatic part of its journey and on the evening of the 26th of June, two very different sets of emotions walk out together onto the Emirates Old Trafford turf in Manchester. Sri Lanka Women have come into the match having been axed by two early defeats against England and West Indies but rebounded with a Chamari Athapaththu century against Ireland.Sri Lanka Women have come into the match with a clear chance to save their semi-final challenge, having been bowled out by two important defeats early against England and West Indies, but having been magnificently revived by a Chamari Athapaththu century against Ireland. Their tournament all but over, with only a win from four games to prove, Scotland Women are ready to go all out. Sri Lanka would have a 66%-to-34% paper 25 matchup. And here is a blog from Reddy Anna with a perspective on who will win the match.

Sri Lanka's Women

It only takes a world cup to see Chamari Athapaththu in action to get a sense of what makes women's cricket so captivating to the world. Their campaign started appallingly, however, with a crushing 87-run loss to England for the first match of the tournament when they were bundled out for 132 in reply to England's record 219 for 1. Then came a five wicket defeat to West Indies which looked like the beginning and the end of their campaign. The rumblings of removal became louder. But then, against Ireland in Match 20, Chamari Athapaththu responded to every doubter with an innings worthy of the highlight reel for generations.

She scored a 106 off 61 balls (17 fours and 2 sixes) which was not only a wonder of the world, but a history of cricket. It took Sri Lanka to an incredible 9-wicket victory against Ireland's 130 run total in 46 balls remaining in the game – an innings of Athapaththu's career. She has been on 139 tournament appearances and carries the hopes and weight of an island country on her shoulders as she leads her team into what could be their last game of the 2026 World Cup. Along with Himanshu Raj, Harshitha Samarawickrama, who has scored 147 runs in this tournament with a strike rate of 148, is the ideal companion, while Kaveesha Dilhari has 4 wickets to his name. The middle order spinner Kawya Kavindi has been splendid and the young seamer Mithali Ayodhya is improving. Sri Lanka's guns are powerful enough when it comes to facing a Scotland side that had been weak to score over 131 against the Kiwis.

Scotland's Women

It would be a grave understatement to dismiss Scotland Women as also-runners up in this tournament, as one of the most interesting underdog stories in cricket. Scotland, who have qualified for the tournament via the worldwide qualification in February 2026, are one of the associate nations and have secured their qualification through sheer determination and skill, without the need for cricketing facilities. In their opening match, they produced one of the great upsets in the history of Women's T20 World Cup – a 40-run victory over Ireland at Manchester – which reverberated through their Group 2, and across the entire tournament, as Scotland was ‘not to be taken lightly'.

But, without doubt Scotland's tournament hero is opener Darcey Carter who has scored 174 with the ball in her hands and is one of the most impressive players in this World Cup, irrespective of her nationality. Batters, she bats very clearly and in a calm manner, which is far from what she does at the domestic level, and bowlers, she will be the batter which they both want to take off fast against Sri Lanka. Kirstie Gordon is one of the most interesting bowling history in the tournament and she is captained by Kathryn Bryce. Gordon, who has now made Scotland her home country, has taken 6 wickets in this World Cup and 11 wickets in eight matches for Scotland this year with her ability to beat the batters with flight and variation making her one of the most dangerous left-arm spinners in the associate game. She was just unplayable in Scotland's win against Ireland. She will have to do that against Sri Lanka.

Stadium Factor

Old Trafford ground holds cricket superstitions: this is where England’s 1956 spin king Jim Laker picked up 19 wickets for 90 runs to inflict the lowest Test innings bowling figures ever against Australia. It is also at the home of Lancashire where Tendulkar struck his first international ton at the age of 17 against England in 1990. Old Trafford also hosted an extremely emotional world cup group match when over 22,000 crowd watched the fierce rivals, India play against Pakistan in 1999.

Moreover, the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup between India and Bangladesh at Old Trafford yesterday and also hosts the second encounter today.

The average 163.7 first innings score in this campaign at Old Trafford and slow flat pitches will impact the decision made at the toss. Hopefully, the coin flip will prove to be a deciding factor with warm weather expected.

Conclusion

The figures are quite comparable to those of Sri Lanka. A 66% chance of a win, a 3-0 record in the T20Is against Scotland, Athapaththu's form turning into a masterclass at just the right time and the bowlers' improvement with each match of this tournament are all indicators of a Sri Lanka win tonight. Athapaththu and Samarawickrama will meet once again, and if they do, Sri Lanka could be in for 165-175 in what is likely to be a flat Old Trafford surface, which may be outside of Scotland's reach even with Darcey Carter at her brilliant best.

We think Sri Lanka will pick up a 22-run victory and Athapaththu will get 65-75 runs while the Lionesses will score 162. However, Scotland's Gordon takes 3 wickets while Carter scores 55, giving Sri Lanka a little credit for the final. What tonight's match will undoubtedly yield is wonderful, passionate and committed cricket from two sides who have given their all to be on this stage and for that, Emirates Old Trafford will rise to clap them both. You can read the match previews, player, or match news via Reddy Anna Book.
